The excavation of the site was divided in two by a portion of the I-95 highway which has been filled and enclosed within a concrete wall structure. Given this major construction effort through the site, the areas to the north and south of the highway were sampled using shovel test pits (STPs) and excavation units to see if natural soils remained in those locations. Only one of these test locations contained a buried A horizon, while the rest were principally characterized by disturbance related to building demolition.

While excavation units and STPs were used to determine the depositional integrity of the site as described above, the features which comprise the site were principally located via a series of mechanically excavated trenches in combination with construction monitoring. South of the highway, long trenches were excavated as a cross section of the former 200 block of Richmond Street. This process resulted in the identification of structural remains that accounted for the foundations of 14 structures. The structural wall remains identified in the cross sections were ascribed to foundations based on their spatial congruence with mapped structures detailed on the 1884 Hexamer and 1916 Sanborn maps of this block. In addition to the 14 foundations, the trenching on the south side of the highway—in combination with later construction monitoring—revealed 12 historic features: two posts, four circular brick-lined privies, three box privies, two pipe trenches (one modern, the other historic), and a furnace.

On the north side of I-95, trenches were excavated in the area between the East Wildey Street back fence line and the extant portion of I-95. This area of the site revealed structural wall remains that comprised the foundations of six historic structures—two fronting on Shackamaxon Street and four on Crease Street. In addition to the six identified foundations, three pits, three posts, one barrel privy, three wood-lined box privies, and two circular brick-lined privies were encountered.
