NEIGHBORHOOD SNAPSHOT
UPPER DELAWARE WARDS
The area referred to as the Delaware Wards spans Philadelphia’s Delaware River waterfront from Vine Street on the north to Arch Street on the south and extends inland to Fourth Street. Located within the original boundaries of the city, the area encompasses the historical Northern Delaware Ward (above Race Street) and Southern Delaware Ward (below Race Street) established in 1800 (Daly and Weinberg 1966: 59). Although William Penn envisioned the gradual and orderly settlement of the interior, commerce exerted such a pull on residents that much of the early settlement of the city was concentrated along the Delaware River waterfront, spreading inexorably north and south along the shoreline from the city center at Market Street (Dunn and Dunn 1982: 14-17; Zabel 2012: 26, 27-28).
